Leaky Buildings. We’ve all heard about them, we know people who own them. You may own one yourself.

If that’s the case, here’s something I can offer you for free right now. It’s a bit of advice. ‘If your property is leaking don’t sit on your hands and wait, because the rot will not wait for you and you could well lose your rights for government/local body funding assistance to make repairs.’

Recently completed re-clad of home on North Shore. Monolithic cladding removed and replaced with weatherboard

In recent years RPM has gained experience with assisting clients through the complex task of repairing or re-cladding leaky homes. This ‘man-made’ catastrophe has created in its wake yet another dimension to the myriad of legal and statutory issues already prevalent in the building industry.

The establishment of the Weathertight Home Resolution Service and the slow, complex, adversarial and expensive processes required in order to wade through that body, often without good results, has put many people off commencing the repair process. In the meantime the rot progresses.

Government, in conjunction with local authorities, has proposed a 50% automatic settlement along with a scheme to underwrite loans for the difference. The eligibility details of this scheme are expected out soon.

Under any circumstances it important property owners take action if they know or even suspect their property is leaking. Property owners can lose their rights if they are out of time with registering the property with the WHRS.
